Two or three nights a week I drift miles offshore over open ocean, tethered under the boat with a camera and a focus light, waiting for the deep to come up. Larval fish, pelagic jellies and animals nobody has named ride the vertical migration toward the surface. Sixty-one of the species in this series had never been photographed alive.
