Every calm night, plankton gathers under the lights off Keauhou Bay and the mantas come to strain it out of the water in slow somersaults. I have photographed this ballet for nine seasons - from snorkel, from the sand, and from the middle of the swarm - for magazines, for the operators who run it, and for the researchers who track each animal by the spots on its belly.
